Daniel D’Souza is a Horticulturist, Landscape Designer and a Botanist by profession. He has 12 years of experience in consulting, designing, training and execution. He is the sole proprietor of ‘PLANTWORLD’.

  • He is truly the pioneer who introduced the ancient art of Bonsai in Goa.
  • On several occasions he has done exclusive flower arrangements in five star resorts in Goa.
  • He has rendered his professional services to the Corporation of the City of Panjim as a ‘Horticulturist & Consultant’, and was a ‘Consultant’ for Vasco Municipality as well. He was chiefly responsible for the beautification of Panjim, Goa. His feature of ‘mound concept’ opposite Captain of Ports, Panjim, with granite boulders has gained great popularity among landscapers.

Completed by research titled “ANATOMICAL STUDIES IN FAMILY ARACEAE” dealing with venation pattern and stomata on 15 species of Genus Anthurium

Academically, Daniel holds a Masters Degree in Botany through research from the Mumbai University where he had uncommonly chosen to carry out research work on the genus Anthurium. His pioneering contribution in this area has since become a landmark research work for subsequent researchers.

Proficiency

Daniel’s areas of expertise are cacti, orchids, anthuriums, exclusive flower arrangements and the living art of bonsai. He is an expert on plant propagation, specific care and miniaturization. He also specializes in hard landscaping viz. insertions of pavements, rock gardens, flowerbeds, water bodies, colour co-ordinated plant material and the art of drawing attention to focal points in a garden.

Awards

In 2002 Daniel was awarded by the Panjim Municipal Council for ‘Excellence in The Field of Horticulture’. He retained the prestigious ‘Maria de Graca Filomena e Figueredo Champions Trophy’ at Plant Utsav as he was bestowed the title for three years in succession - 2002, 2004 and 2005.

Daniel being the pioneer in Goa for creating awareness of the ancient art of Bonsai, has displayed exhaustive collections at numerous plant shows, including his last exhibition ‘BONSAI-2001’ that was held at Margao. He had the privilege of His Excellency Shri Mohd. Fazal, Ex-Governor of Goa to inaugurate his ‘BONSAI-2000’ Exhibition held in Panjim. He also had the great opportunity and honour of having the world renowned ‘Masters of Bonsai’ in India, Mr. NIKUNJ PAREKH & Mrs. JYOTI PAREKH to view his work of art. Daniel has been the recipient of numerous prizes and awards for his entries in several categories at plant competitions. At the ‘Plant Utsav-2001’ held at Kala Academy, Campal, he won 16 prizes (Scroll of Merit) for his entries, the highest number to be won so far, thus bagging the ‘Maria de Graca Filomena e Figueredo Champions Trophy’ at the ‘Plant Utsav-2002’ held at Church Square Garden, Panjim, in association with the Panjim Municipal Council, Daniel retained the Champions Trophy by winning 16 prizes for the second consecutive year. Further, in reality, he retained the ‘Champions Trophy’ in 2005 held in Mapusa.

Daniel has been accredited with several articles in leading local periodicals; radio and television chat shows and has made enormous academic contributions to journals in Goa. He is a member of the Bombay Natural History Society, World Wild Fund for Nature, among others, and is often invited to judge floral design and garden competitions in Goa.

Interests

Daniel has undertaken several freelance projects in Goa, single-handedly, and under duress. He has partaken in a number of exhibitions and solo displays. He has conducted several workshops and training programmes.

Daniel has always been, and continues to be, a hands-on ‘Go Green’ person. He is a member of various botanical societies, as he supports and promotes the protection of the environment and ecology. He has also completed an orientation programme on ‘Environmental Science’.

While plants and environment has been his forte, Daniel has also been a dynamic sportsperson and won numerous awards, curated museums and also acted in a film.

Daniel has continually won accolades at several prestigious competitions held in Goa since 1992.

Daniel has frequently lectured at various schools, colleges and institutions, and has been a moderator at various events.
